Mermaid Uncovered at Seawork
01 Jul 2005
Dorset UK based Mermaid Marine Engines Ltd chose Seawork 2005 International asthe venue to launch the first 'All British' marine diesel engine for many years. The new engine, due to be on the market by September, is code named JM4 to reflect the close cooperation between base engine manufacturer JCB and Mermaid acting as marinisers.
The JM4 is the first in a series of engines announced at Seawork . It is a four cylinder naturally aspirated unit for which Mermaid will have a flexible ratings policy, dependent upon emission requirements. Mermaid anticipates that the engine meeting Tier 2 emissions is likely to be the preferred specification within the EU. This version will develop 83hp at 2,200rpm. An engine configured to meet Tier 3 emissions will be available at a slightly lower rating of 78hp while for markets where no emission regulations are applied they can be set to develop up to 100hp.
This marinisation of the durable JCB engine is expected to give 20,000 hours operation before a major overhaul and features a high maximum torque of 313Nm at 1,300rpm. The design incorporates four valves per cylinder with a heavy duty bed plate structure and rear gear train.
Of particular interest to fishermen and certain other commercial users will be the heavy duty, gear driven power take off incorporated as standard, from which up to 80hp can be extracted. Mermaid believes this feature could be unique in engines of this size. Ancillary equipment such as raw water pump are also gear driven for reliability and Mermaid's usual wide range of marine transmissions will be available.
Mermaid anticipates substantial sales into the fishing and commercial workboat markets for a product which will be supported by both the Mermaid and JCB distributor networks.
