Chinese Yard's Tug Export Boom

The Nanjing Tong Kah Shipbuilding Yard , located some 300km up China's Yangtze River from the sea, is churning out barges and tugs for overseas owners. The relatively new yard has recently delivered two 2,400hp tugs and two more are nearing completion.

The Bureau Veritas classed boats measure 29.2m LOA with a 9m beam and a moulded depth of 4.4m. This latest set of four boats is each powered by twin Cummins KTA38 M2 engines rated 1,200hp at 1,800rpm.

Turning 1.9 by 1.69m four bladed Kaplan props in nozzles and driving through Reintjes WAF 562 gears with 5.4:1 ratios, the tugs deliver 30 tons of bollard pull. The Kort nozzles are fabricated in the shipyard while the 850kg manganese bronze propellers are purchased from a supplier.

The boats are each equipped with a towing winch holding 300m of 42mm wire and towing hooks. Accommodation is provided for a crew of 12, with staterooms for the captain and chief engineer on main deck level as well as two twin cabins and one six man cabin in the forecastle. Fuel is contained in 2,000m 3of tank space.

The yard is able to build a tug of this class in eight months and is currently completing one every six weeks. The current order is going for export to owners in Singapore and Malaysia.
