It has been confirmed that the historic steam tug/tender Daniel Adamson has been placed on the National Register of Historic Vessels (NRHV) Designated List , maintained by the National Historic Ships Committee (NHSC). This is a significant step forward for the Daniel Adamson Preservation Society , currently working to restore to operating condition Britain's last surviving steam tug/tender, built on Merseyside in 1903.
The Marine Accident Investigation Board has issued an MAIB Safety Bulletin (2/2005) following three significant collisions between harbour tugs and the vessels they were assisting during the first four months if 2005. In one incident the tug had to be beached and minor damage was caused to the others. The Bulletin urges operators to review their training schemes and harbour authorities, pilots and tug owners to regularly review the capabilities and limitations of their harbour tugs and crews.
J P Knight (Caledonian) Ltd has purchased the Japanese built Iwaki Maru to upgrade their tug services based at Invergordon.
Now bearing the name Kinnaird , the vessel is on route to Scotland under its own power where it will be brought up to UK standards before entering service. The 32m tug was built in 2003 and is powered by Niigata main engines, currently de-rated to 4,200bhps and ZP-31 azimuthing units.
Svitzer , part of the Maersk Group , has acquired Lisbon Tugs - Companhia de Rebocadores de Lisboa, SA The tug fleet will be operated by the wholly owned company Svitzer Lisboa - Rebocadores e Servicos Maritimos, SA and it is likely to reinforced with tugs from elsewhere in Europe.
