Pulling Paper at the Port of Kotka
01 Jun 2005
Kalmar has received an order from Steveco Oy of Kotka in Finland for nine TRX-252 tractors to be used to move 95 ton Stora Enso cargo units (SECUs) in the port. The machines will be delivered in June of this year.
Handling of the SECUs is due to begin next month at Steveco's Hietanen terminal in the Port of Kotka. The SECU container concept has been developed to improve efficiency in transporting paper via Gothenburg to Zeebrugge, Tilbury and Immingham. The empty SECUs arrive back in Kotka from Gothenburg and are re-loaded with cargo in the terminal and then shipped back.
The SECUs feature a heavy casing to protect goods from weather and wind. They are the heart of Stora Enso's North European logistics system. The existing traffic between Gothenburg and Zeebrugge , currently serving Stora Enso's Swedish mills, will be expanded to include the South Finland mills, increasing the need for SECUs by a further 1,000 units.
The tractors themselves have been built specifically to handle the 95 ton SECUs and are the most powerful machines in the manufacturer's terminal tractor range. The 15 ton TRX-252 is equipped with an 11 litre, 246 kW engine and ZF 6WG-260 automatic transmission. Its wheelbase measures 3.6m and the fifth wheel has been built to accommodate a 3.5" kingpin.
Special modifications have been made to the driver location, with the cabin moved further out to the side to improve visibility by enabling him to see down the side of the SECU whilst moving it.
