Comforts on Refitted Dredger
01 Jun 2005
Fleetwood based Wyre Marine Services has recently completed dredging works at Stranraer Harbour in Scotland for the Dumfries & Galloway Council .
The scope of works called for the removal of 14,715m 3of silt from a harbour used by small fishing vessels. With poor winter weather and hard clay causing delays, Wyre changed the plant on the vessel from a conventional grab crane to a fixed arm excavator which delivered the additional force to penetrate the difficult soil.
For the Stranraer works Wyre Marine mobilised its 28.93m LOA vessel 'Lantic Bay', which the company had extensively refitted at Fleetwood prior to the start of works. Crew comfort was ensured by extensive alterations to the vessel's superstructure which created three berths, spacious galley facilities and a new bridge. A hydraulic handling crane was fitted to the port side which gives Lantic Bay additional versatility for other marine works such jetty repair and marine construction support.
Wyre Marine Services' next plan for Lantic Bay is to expand its dredged material discharge capabilities so that in addition to dumping through the bottom doors, it will also be able to pump to shore for land reclamation works. The company also operates two tugs, both of which are named Neil .
