Monitoring & Control

Save A Lot with AMOT Controls' Early Warning Products

AMOT Controls brought two useful new products to the Norshipping exhibition in Oslo earlier this month. The XTS-W bearing condition monitoring system provides early warning of bearing wear while the TomaHawk 8635A programmable logic controller combines the power of a PLC with ease of use of an embedded controller.

The XTS-W system detects wear of main, big end and crosshead bearings on marine diesel engines before steel on steel contact occurs, unlike traditional temperature monitoring and oil mist detection techniques that allow shutdown before the failure but not before problems have already started. A new concept based on linear bearing wear instrumentation gives operators the maximum time for controlled engine shutdown and ship manoeuvres and also allows for effective planned maintenance.

Continuous bearing monitoring enables real time wear trend analysis, with a picture of the rate of change of bearing wear giving a much earlier indication of a potential engine problem than a simple alarm threshold can provide.

The AMOT TomaHawk 8635A programmable logic controller brings users a simple and flexible programming concept that allows custom and/or pre-programmed applications to be combined and tailored to meet user needs exactly.

With 120 I/O points, two ModBus communications ports, a tachometer input, a four line 80 character backlit display and a tactile keypad, the TomaHawk controller is suitable for use with engines, turbines, compressors, generators and other equipment.

Key to the system flexibility is its patented HawkWin software, a Windows based configuration programme enabling powerful and complex programmes to be constructed in a fraction of the time needed to programme a typical PLC. It also allows programming changes to be made in the field using a laptop computer.
