Simple System Knocks NOx Emissions

Regulations for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships contained in Annex VI of the MARPOL Convention came into force last month. Designed to control harmful emissions from ships' exhausts, they set limits of sulphur oxide (SOx) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) and prohibit deliberate emissions of ozone depleting substances.

The MariNOx from Martek Marine Ltd (UK) claims to be the world's first and only approved continuous on board NOx and energy efficiency monitoring system in accordance with Annex VI and the MEPC 103(49) regulations. After an extensive eight month programme which involved ship trials, a Type Approval was issued last month by Lloyd's Register.

Deployment of MariNOx thus allows operators of all ships, fixed and floating drill rigs above 400 tons constructed after 1 January 2005 to demonstrate compliance of their engines with prescribed NOx emission limits by simply taking readings from the system.

Direct on board monitoring is the preferred option to adopting the onerous 'Parameter Check' method to demonstrate compliance with the NOx emission limits, whereby an internal inspection of engine components is both disruptive and costly.

In addition to delivering compliance with the regulations, MariNOx also facilitates major fuel savings by monitoring the NOx levels, Co2 and oxygen together with other engine and ambient parameters. This facilitates the tuning of the engine for optimum efficiency, saving up to 4% of fuel cost, resulting in a payback period of only one year.

The system will also facilitate the adjustment of the engine to perform optimally to suit different emission control areas throughout the world. With a knowledge of the operating range of measured engine parameters, the MariNOx system can be configured to provide an alarm when the NOx value changes to indicate a requirement for maintenance, which besides saving on fuel may also protect engine components from premature wear.

MariNOx can provide a permanent indication of emissions performance in the form of an annual emissions report for an engine, which may become more relevant as the adoption of emissions trading becomes a reality.
