Last Severn Class Lifeboat Named

The RNLI 's final Severn class lifeboat was named last month in a ceremony at Poole by outgoing engineering manager Bob Cripps, who was instrumental in introducing the all weather lifeboat into service in 1995. At 17m in length, the Severn remains the largest boat in the RNLI's fleet.

The ceremony crowned 18 years of service to the RNLI by Bob Cripps, who has left to take up a new position as technical director of VT Halmatic. Speaking about the ceremony he said, 'It is a great honour to name the last Severn class lifeboat on this special day. Through my work with the RNLI I have spent many years ensuring that when our volunteer lifeboat crews are asked to put to sea, they can have complete confidence that we have provided them with the very best equipment we can. This lifeboat, one of the RNLI's most enduring designs, is sure to continue saving lives at sea over the years to come.'

The Margaret , Joan and Fred Nye put to sea with a crew made up of local RNLI volunteer crew members from Weymouth and the Isle of Wight.

It joins the RNLI's relief fleet, providing essential cover where a station lifeboat is called away for maintenance.

The new £2m lifeboat was paid for by a total of five different legacies generously left to the RNLI. The main donor, Miss Joan Nye, requested that the lifeboat should be named in memory of herself and her parents. The remaining legacies were from Miss Clara Hilda Gabriel Willis, Mrs Margaret Jane Howarth, Miss Mabel Lingard, and Mr Edwin Oakenfull. A generous gift from Mrs J M Barnsley provided vital equipment onboard the new lifeboat. Six out of every ten RNLI lifeboat launches are only possible thanks to legacies.
