Dockstavarvet Delivers for Denmark
01 Jun 2005
The twentieth pilot boat from Sweden’s Dockstavarvet shipyard to Denmark was delivered in April. The newbuild Luna was delivered at the Nordhavn A/S facilities in the port of Aarhus and will be stationed in Fredericia, the main station of the Belt Pilot organisation. The Belt Pilots were formed of independent pilot organisations Little Belt, Esbjerg, Odense and Kalundborg, comprising 18 pilots and 29 coxswains.
Luna is the fourteenth boat of Dockstavarvet’s 14m type. The aluminium hulled boat measures 13.9m by 4.6m and features a resiliently mounted GRP sandwich deckhouse with seating for up to six pilots in addition to the coxswain. Luna is the first such vessel to be delivered with Scania’s new 16 litre engines combined with Twin Disc Quick Shift gears and electronic control system. With a heavy duty rating of 400kW, the package gives a sprint speed of 23 knots along with very smooth handling. Noise levels in the wheelhouse are kept well below the stipulated 65db(A).
Furuno has delivered the navigational equipment, including their new FAR-2X17 black box radar, SC-50 GPS compass, autopilot, MaxSea chart system and two 17in flat screens.
In addition to the normal security equipment, the vessel is fitted with an MOB direction finder, a rescue crane, and a separate control station on the aft deck to facilitate fast and safe rescue of persons from the water under the most severe conditions. Three more boats of the same type are currently under build at the Dockstavarvet yard with the final delivery scheduled for May 2006.
