Semco Completes Big Tow to Angola
01 Jun 2005
Semco Salvage & Marine Pte Ltd has successfully completed tow to location, positioning and associated deck operations for the FPSO Kizomba B offshore Luanda in Angola last month. This project follows the earlier tow and positioning of FPSO Kizomba A , completed in 2004.
Kizomba B was towed from Ulsan, Korea by three large ocean-going tugs, the 165 tonnes bollard pull sister vessels Salvanguard and Salviscount and the 110 tonnes bollard pull Salvigour . A fourth tug, the 110 tonnes bollard pull Salvaliant accompanied the convoy as escort. When the FPSO arrived offshore Luanda the positioning spread was then joined by the 146 tonnes bollard pull AHTS Salvana in the role of fifth positioning tug.
The engineering for Kizomba B positioning and deck operations began in September of last year. It involved a team of many disciplines, mobilised in a working alliance with Offshore Dynamics Ltd (ODL). This alliance, 'FPSOlutions, provides clients with a full turnkey service for major marine offshore installation projects.
In the case of Kizomba B , Semco General Manager Peter Lee was Project Director, whilst Captain Dave Betts was Project Manager for both onshore and offshore phases. ODL's Richard Bush was also Project Manager for the initial onshore phase.
Aside from taking charge of the 35-strong positioning and deck operations team, Captain Betts was also responsible for logistics operations involving five Semco vessels and a sixth chartered vessel.
Captain Betts said, 'The high standard of work and commitment shown by everyone from the tug crews to project personnel on board the FPSO greatly contributed to the success of this project. In particular, the strict standards for safe working were complied with in full.'
Peter Lee added, 'This project is a milestone for Semco.
Furthermore, the wide scope of work exceeds that normally asked of a towage contractor.
This project was also much bigger in scope than Kizomba A , due to the increased deck operations work content, which involved a team of 14 deck riggers, heaving in and tensioning all 13 moorings as they were handed over by the Saibos FDS.
These moorings had been pre-laid in around 1,150m water depth.'
