Positive Spin for Circular Skimmer
01 Mar 2005
Denmark based oil pollution response equipment specialists Ro-Clean Desmi have fared well at recent skimmer tests formulated by the US Coast Guard and carried out at the OHMSETT national testing facility in New Jersey.
Skimmer performance was to be judged on three factors, oil recovery rate, efficiency and viscosity range. The USCG’s newly formulated standard set of parameters under which skimmers can be tested are conducted with two oil types, one light and one heavy, in both waves and calm conditions, and with both thin (less than half an inch) and thick (one inch) oil layers.
Ro-Clean Desmi’s ‘Desmi Helix’ skimmer excelled in all the tests. It managed a gross oil recovery rate of over 130 gallons per minute in some situations and averaged nearly 80% efficiency on the thicker layers. The Desmi Helix secret weapon is a circular brush design which is the result of several years of research and development.
The circular skimmer’s operational advantage over square or rectangular units is that oil is able to flow freely onto the oil collecting brushes from any angle. This is especially helpful with heavy and thick oils that do not flow well. The design also significantly increases the total surface area of the oil collecting brushes that are in contact with the oil layer, in this case over 13 linear feet. The Desmi Helix is available supplied as a complete skimmer head fitted with the proven Desmi vertical screw pump or, alternatively, it can be supplied as an adaptor to fit onto other industry skimmers.
