Fluggaboat Gets Tough at Seawork

New exhibitor Unst Inshore Services will travel to Seawork 2005 all the way from the north end of Unst in the Shetlands, where the Muckle Flugga lighthouse is the most northerly beacon in the UK. In homage to the rugged nature of their home base, Unst Inshore has named their rugged new workboat the Fluggaboat . The boat is aimed primarily at the commercial market although private orders are also being taken.
Visitors to Seawork will see what initially appears to be just another RIB, but that is where the similarity ends.
Utilising a patented concept, the innovative new Fluggaboat uses an aluminium hull and compartmentalised HDPE plastic collar which can be walked on and, because it is not under pressure, does not require an annual pressure test. Collar development has taken six years but has resulted in any incredibly tough and low maintenance boat which promises long life and low operational costs.
Strength and durability were primary design considerations and the first Fluggaboat was designed to Lloyds regulations for 30 knots in 2m seas. The resulting craft measures 7.7m LOA with a beam of 2.8m and capable of speeds to 33 knots with a single 135hp outboard.
The available cargo area measures 5m by 1.65m, variable depending on layout. Another version measures 9.5m LOA and both models are also available with a marine diesel/waterjet package.
Stability and swamping tests were carried out using a 1.3 ton load. After swamping, the hull self drained in 54 seconds while stationary. The Fluggaboat complies with MCA Category 2 with the addition of a wheelhouse and also qualifies as an FRC.
Certification is for a one ton payload and crew or for 12 people and kit.
Oil companies, police, coastguard and harbour authorities have all been showing interest in the Fluggaboat. On display at Seawork in June will be a new 6.1m version currently in prototype stage which will be powered by twin Evinrude E-Tec outboards.
