SCUBAR Do the Business
01 May 2005
Berkshire Fire and Rescue Services in the UK have put the SCUBAR Underwater Scope to good use during recent trials by using it to check for bodies in a car which had crashed off the road into a waterway.
Designed and manufactured by Hampshire based Iris Surveillance, SCUBAR is a fully submersible underwater camera system with its own light source which attaches to a 4.5m telescopic pole to enable underwater checking of anode and propeller condition, barnacle growth, anchor sites and a host of other operations where marine underwater inspection is required and boatlifts or divers are not available or cost prohibitive.
As demonstrated by Berkshire Fire and Rescue services, there is also a range of potential applications in marine search and rescue operations as well as for on-land situations such as checking into burning lofts or beneath collapsed buildings.
SCUBAR attaches to a TFT flatscreen 5.6in colour monitor, presenting clear images to the operator. As it is easily removable from its pole and can attach directly to its monitor, SCUBAR can also be used for viewing difficult to access areas of the engine room and elsewhere on board boats.
Iris director Tony Digweed said, 'Spotting a hole in the marine market has enabled us to design and manufacture a product which is not only practical but also affordable.
This has been proven by the amount of feedback which we have received. Following its launch at the Southampton Boat Show last year, interest has been non-stop, including orders from the British Royal Navy and several from British Waterways.'
