Expansion Plans at Folkestone Harbour
01 May 2005
Development plans for Folkestone Harbour UK include the introduction of two further berths to accommodate larger vessels of up to 7m draft and a harbour dredging programme as well as the ongoing refurbishment of existing berths and the creation of more cargo handling storage space and vehicle standage areas. Port operators hope to have the new berths operational later this year.
Folkestone Harbour was purchased from Sea Containers by Roger De Hann CBE last summer after the line had closed its route to Boulogne. Now fully operational 24 hours a day under the newly formed Folkestone Harbour Company Limited, the port is continuing to expand its cargo handling services for companies seeking an alternative to other, more traffic congested crosschannel ports in the South East.
Folkstone Harbour currently has three berths that can accommodate cargo vessels.
The South Pier is in the Outer Harbour area and dry at low tide but Berths 1 and 3 can both accommodate vessels of 4m draft at low tide, with Berth 1 being a deepwater berth. The port also enjoys a direct rail link which the new owners are looking to promote commercially to attract rail freight cargo traffic.
In a drive to attract new business to Folkestone Harbour, the Folkestone Harbour Company Limited has launched a new website at www. folkestoneharbour. com
