When ships are loaded with liquids such as gasoline, fuel oils or naptha, vapour is displaced from the hold. This vapour can either be recovered or destroyed using an enclosed flare. The composition of the displaced vapour is highly variable and under certain conditions can fall within the flammability limits of the gas.

Littlehampton UK based Kittiwake, which specialises in fuel and lube oil testing in the marine industries, has launched a new range of remote online sensors for lubricant and machine condition monitoring. The ANALEXrs range are from Analex, which Kittiwake acquired in 2003 to enhance their own range of portable low cost lubricant analysis tools.
