Funding Extension for Sea and Water

The UK's Minister of State for Transport, Dr Stephen Ladyman MP, has awarded a further three years of funding to Sea and Water, the campaigning organisation charged with promoting the increased movement of freight on inland waterways and coastal and short sea routes.

The British Government has recognised the importance of these shipping methods as a way of reducing the nation's chronic road congestion, thus improving the efficiency of the UK transport network whilst also lessening the environmental impact of freight movement. In announcing the renewed funding, Dr Ladyman expressed his belief that Sea and Water could make a significant contribution to the achievement of modal shift.

After a meeting also attended by Sea and Water president Bo Larenius (also group chief executive of Associated British Ports) and managing director Mike Elsom, Sea and Water’s chairman James McConville said, ‘This clearly demonstrates the seriousness with which the government takes this organisation. We have made a noticeable impact in a relatively short period of time.

Communication between the industry and government is essential for the formulation of policy and strategy. We look forward to working closely with both sides in the development of improved logistic systems. Contributions from the now extensive membership have been vital in promoting an effective dialogue and shaping policy.’ He went on to add, ‘We now need to focus on the coming period.

Before the end of this year we will have produced our first major water freight publication, launched a comprehensive online water freight database and information system, and set out our clear policy agenda. We have a lot to do if we’re to encourage a significant amount of freight off the roads and onto water and with continued government backing and growing industry support I believe Sea and Water can make a real difference.’
