Nelson Revisited in Historic City of Portsmouth
01 Nov 2005
Assisted on board by parents, teachers and helpers, the 600 children were dressed variously as pirates, naval ratings of the time, Norsemen and even a frogman.
One child, 16 year old Jack Cleverley, was resplendent in full Admiral Lord Nelson uniform. The children enjoyed a two hour voyage round the Solent with Wightlink, during which time they made a video of the event as part of their coursework, held a fancy dress competition forthe best costume, and dressed the ship with Admiral Lord Nelson’s famous signal, ‘England Expects’.
The school flag was also flown rom the masthead. The event was part of the ongoing celebrations for Trafalgar 200 and Sea Britain and was organised in response to a request by Portsmouth City Council’s Education Sub Committee that as many children as possible should get on the water during the Sea Britain year of 2005.
