  • Crane Gain for NME

    Norwegian Maritime Equipment (NME) has won a ? 500,000 order to supply ten marine cranes for five new Norwegian coast guard vessels, the first of which is scheduled for launch by the end of this year. The order was received from the Sczecin Ship Repair Yard Gryfia SA in Poland, which is building the vessels for Remoy management AS and Remoy Shipping AS. 

  • Swell Compensator System Lifts Crane Capacity

    Hytop BV has designed, produced, delivered, tested and operated two swell compensator systems which will enable Genius Vos to handle heavy loads on the open sea. Key to the system is ensuring that a crane which can take a 280 ton static lift load but is not equipped to respond to rapidly changing loads does not experience more than 50 tons jump load while 150 ton platform structures are being lifted from a supply vessel at sea. 

  • TTS Buys Kocks Deck Machinery

    In a continuing policy of acquiring companies which complement its current portfolio, Norway's TTSMarine ASA has signed a final sale and purchase agreement to acquire Germany's Kocks GmbH of Bremen. 

  • Winch Drives Delivered to Tight Schedule

    West Yorkshire UK based hydraulic motors and drive systems manufacturer Hagglunds Drives was selected by Subsea 7 to supply two drive systems plus auxiliary supplies for ROV handling on the vessel Skandi Neptune .The power units are in the familiar cabinet style of Hagglunds and suitable for on-deck operations, complete with the drive controls and Spider monitoring system. Also manufactured by Hagglunds, this provides constant power control to maximise the line speed available. 

  • Heavy Lift for Light Load

    After delivering its heaviest ever load last year, the 59,500 ton Thunderhorse production platform for BP , Dockwise Shipping has now transported its lightest load ever. The company's headquarters at Breda in the Netherlands mobilised the dock ship Enterprise to transport a Zeppelin NT airship weighing only 700 kilos from Amsterdam to South Africa. 

  • Dubai Drydocks Builds Its Own Crane

    Visitors to ShipRepair & Conversion Dubai may find time to make a side excursion to Dubai Drydocks, which has built a 2,000 ton floating crane to its own account. 

  • HATLAPA Extends to the Eastern Mediterranean

    The Arsenal do Alfeite yard in Portugal has built two 16.1m aluminium patrol boats for that country's navy. Each boat is powered by twin Scania DI12M marine diesels rated 460kW at 2,200 rpm which are direct coupled to UltraJet 376 waterjets.

    The fusion of the Europort and Rotterdam Maritime exhibitions has inspired Dordrecht based water lubricated stern tube system specialists Maprom Engineering BV to make a move of its own. 

  • RingProp Deal

    RingProp PLC has selected E P Barrus Ltd to distribute the company's innovative ringed propeller line in the UK and Republic of Ireland. Barrus will employ its substantial technical experience to complement RingProp's own testing programme and help to create a selection guide for boat users in the UK. Barrus will also be responsible for warehousing, distribution and sales. 

  • Propulsion Packages for Canal Tug Fleet

    British Waterways has awarded a £300,000 contract to Stroud based Beta Marine for 23 new engines and associated hydraulic propulsion systems. 

  • Naturally Aspirated Clean Marine Engine

    The new naturally aspirated Perkins Sabre M92B is claimed to be the only marine propulsion engine in the world to be certified as complying with Central Commission for Navigation on the Rhine (CCNR) Stage Two requirements, which do not come into force until January 2007. The new direct injection four cylinder 4.4 litre engine supersedes the Perkins Sabre M92 and complies with all known European marine environmental legislation until 2011.

    The International Association of Dredging Contractors celebrated its 40th anniversary last month with the 100th edition of Terra et Aqua , the magazine which has been its flagship publication since 1972 and one of the main means by which dredging information is disseminated to the world at large.

    During the summer, the cruise liner Queen Mary 2 visited the Scottish Highlands, berthing at Invergordon on the Cromarty Firth.     The Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands has confirmed that the Dutch Cabinet recently reached a decision on a package of projects for the forthcoming Rotterdam Mainport Development Project (PMR). 

  • UK Dredging Extends its Reach

    UK Dredging (UKD), Associated British Ports' (ABP) dredging arm, 'moved from strength to strength' in the first half of 2006, said the company in a statement issued in September, with its fleet employed in both ABP and third-party dredging works. 

  • Mooring Basin Opens

    The revitalisation of Scotland's inland waterways has reached a major milestone with the formal opening of a new £1.2m mooring basin on the Forth & Clyde Canal.     The ferry Povl Anker is one of four BornholmsTraffiken vessels that transport passengers, mail and goods between the Danish island of Bornholm and the ports of Sassnitz (Germany) and Ystad (Sweden). The Povl Anker is 190m LOA, 12,000 ton vessel with a capacity for 1,500 passengers.

  • First S-VDR Type Approval

    Norwegian marine electronic safety equipment manufacturer Jotron Electronics AS hasclaimed an industry first by gaining Type Approval for their new TRON S-VDR (Simplified Voyage Data Recorder) capsule. Jotron's latest product has been tested and approved by DNV in accordance with IMO Res.<$>MSC.163 (78). 

  • New Pompey-Le Havre Service

    Paris based shipping company LD Lines started operations between Portsmouth UK and Le Havre in France earlier this month. The 1992 built Norman Spirit , with a capacity for 120 trucks and 1,850 passengers, will operate the new service daily. Traffic forecast is for 600,000 passengers and 50,000 trucks per year.

  • New UK/Holland Freight Service

    Harwich International Port haswelcomed the first call of a new Nedlines BV ro-pax service. The service between the Essex UK port and IJmuiden in the Netherlands is operated by the MS Envoy and is chartered by Finnlines. It focuses on driver accompanied freight traffic and offers a daily overnight sailing. 

  • Hypo Hoists Young Engineer Award

     Britain's most talented young engineers converged on the Old Royal Navy College in Greenwich last month to participate in the 2005 Annual Celebration of Engineering .Taking the top award, Young Engineer for Britain 2005 , and a £2,500 prize was 18 year old Tanya Budd of Waingels College in Reading.

    One of many events commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar this month is an ambitious tree planting project organised by the Woodlands Trust in the UK. 'Tree for All' invites anyone to dedicate a tree in the Trust's new Victory Wood at a site overlooking the sea in Medway, Kent. The Wood is near Chatham Docks, where HMS Victory and several other Trafalgar fleet ships were built.

    A new guide, The Tidal Thames - a guide for users of recreational craft , is available free from the Port of London Authority . The 30 page booklet explains the key rules that apply on the tidal Thames and outlines basic safety procedures.   • Work Starts on Turner Contemporary

    James Mallord William Turner was on board a Margate steamer to sketch the passage of HMSTemeraire as it was towed upriver by a smoke belching 'modern' steam tug on 6 September 1838. The 'ship that saved Victory' at the Battle of Trafalgar was on a last voyage to Beatson's ship breaking yard at Rotherhithe. The work which resulted from Turner's observations that day, Fighting Temeraire , has just been voted Britain's favourite painting. 

  • Tide Turns in Scotland

    Renewable wave and tidal energy could provide up to 10% of Scotland's electricity production and create around 7,000 new jobs under measures announced last month. 

  • 'Matador 3' Lifts First Offshore Substation

    The UK's first offshore substation has been successfully installed at the Barrow Offshore Wind Farm in the Irish Sea. The substation transforms the power generated by the windfarm before it can be exported to the national grid and marks a crucial stage in the development of the 30 turbine facility, which is expected to provide power for some 65,000 homes. 

  • Breakwater Beats the Weather at Holy Loch

    Intermarine Ltd has just completed a race against time to design, supply and install a floating breakwater and moorings in the Holy Loch on the west coast of Scotland. The breakwater for client Seavision Ltd creates a large area of protected water for the continuing development of moorings over the next three to five years.

Having examined the background and scale of developments using existing and planned wind farms in the UK, the 14 page paper looks at legislation and guidelines, raising awareness, the market, research & development, other technical issues, safety, the environment and contracting, whilst wave and tidal power are covered in appendices.

    Rotterdam based Flexifloat Systems BV is building another C-7 Class Modular Self-elevating Platform after their previous newbuild was purchased out of the Combifloat fleet earlier this year by Huta Marine Works of Saudi Arabia.

    Celebrating 15 years in business at Europort Maritime will be safety systems and simulators manufacturer Transas Group. Founded in 1990 in St Petersburg, Russia, Transas has grown to where it now retains 30% of the world market for ECDIS systems and has created an electronic chart collection containing 13,000 items. 

  • Ports Staff Take ISPS Exercise

    With the first anniversary of the introduction of the ISPS Code now seeming to be a distant memory, many ship managers and port facility operators are tending to overlook their obligation to undertake security exercises on a calendar year basis. This means that at the latest,every ISPS compliant ship and port facility must have undertaken a security drill by 31 December 2005.

    Ireland's HydroServe Projects Ltd has taken delivery of the 21m shallow draft multi-purpose vessel MVHusky , which was shipped to Killybegs from the Far East on board the freighter BBC Mexico . The vessel was previously under contract to Shell for gas field support operations and is specially equipped to work in 'hot' areas on gas and oil jetties. 

  • Boxship Towed to Rotterdam

    The 2,757teu container vessel Fowairet , which suffered hogging damage and hold flooding after running aground on September 20 between Terneuzen and Antwerp with part-hazardous cargo, has been safely towed to Rotterdam by joint salvors Multraship Salvage and URS Salvage and Maritime Contracting .

    In early October the Crowley Maritime Corporation , based in Oakland, California, announced that it has acquired Titan Maritime LLC , a worldwide salvage company based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The newly acquired company will be known as Titan and become a wholly owned Crowley subsidiary.

  • 'Garibaldo' Visits the UK

    A new Azimuthing Stern Drive (ASD) tug, the 38m Garibaldo , attracted considerable interest when it arrived in Britain in September. Owned by Purplewater Towing Ltd ofSwitzerland, registered in London and built in China, the vessel had just completed a barge tow from Singapore to Newcastle on its delivery voyage. 

  • The Duke of Normandy Demonstrates Its Versatility

    Jersey Harbours are making very good use of their new shallow draft, multi-purpose tug, the Duke of Normandy , which was displayed at Seawork 2005 . The first of the new generation of Damen Shoalbuster 2609 tugs to be built for a port authority, its versatility has surprised even its operators. 

  • K Damen Complete the First of Three Bugsier Tugs

    Dutch builders Shipyard K Damen Europe BV has delivered the first of three virtually identical tractor tugs to Bugsier Reederei und Bergungs-Gesellschaft mbH & Co KG of Hamburg.

    The University of Southampton 's School of Ocean & Earth Science has taken delivery of the new research vessel RVCallista , which is to be based at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (NOCS), a joint venture between the University of Southampton and the National Environment Research Council (NERC).

    With the only dry dock in Wales remaining in full time operation, Milford Haven Ship Repairers offers the only such facility between Falmouth and Liverpool. The yard receives a variety of work, the most significant component of which is close working relationship it has developed with Svitzer Marine Ltd , the AP Moller Group subsidiary with tug operations in Liverpool, Swansea, Cardiff, Newport and Avonmouth.

  • Williams in West Wales - One Year On

    It is just over a year since Southampton based Williams Shipping Marine and The Milford Docks Company , part of the Milford Haven Port Authority Group , joined forces to form a new joint venture company. Known as Williams Marine and Port Services Ltd , (WMPS) the new company is now well established in the Port of Pembroke and provides a wide range of marine services to shipping and terminal operators in the Milford Haven waterway and throughout South Wales. 

  • Teamwork Rocks Against the Sea

    Team Van Oord is nearing completion of Phase One of the High Knock to Dymchurch Redoubt Sea Defences near Dover in the UK. The works for the UK Environment Agency are to upgrade existing defences and maintain the protection they provide to some 2,500 homes lying below sea level in Dymchurch and the wider areas of Romney Marsh.
