Box Handling Streamlined at Muuga Container Terminal
01 Oct 2005
Estonia's main dedicated container handling facility, Muuga Container Terminal (Muuga CT) in the Port of Tallinn , has placed an order with Kalmar Industries for two all electric E-One rubber tyred gantry (RTG) cranes and two Shuttle Carrier (r) of the fast transport one over one design.
Once in operation next April, the shuttle carriers and 6+1 wide, 4 high E-Ones will form the backbone of the handling system at Muuga CT's new container terminal expansion, to be built on a five hectare expansion site during the winter to come.
Kalmar's all electric E-One RTG will meet Muuga CT's requirements for increased productivity. Without the need for hydraulics, the E-One features a low emissions diesel engine and is fitted with an electric trolley, wheel turning and spreader. Fewer mechanical components result in service intervals for both crane and engine of up to 1,000 hours.
The Shuttle Carrier(r) is able to operate independently, leading to a more efficient work cycle.
Its light weight reduces energy consumption and operating costs.
The order also includes one ContChamp DRF reachstacker, which will complement the Kalmar fleet of reachstackers and terminal tractors already in operation. The existing terminal will continue to work with reachstackers.
The shuttle carrier system gives the terminal operator the ability to minimise the amount of traffic in the container yard. Using shuttle carriers under the RTGs means trucks can be eliminated from the stacking area. The reduced traffic creates a safer, less stressful environment for drivers and also increases productivity, as shuttle carriers can lift one container over the other and require substantially less space than trucks in which to manoeuvre.
Because of the shape of Muuga CT, the driving distance from the quay to the stacks can be up to 1 km. As such, terminal tractors with multitrailers will continue to handle transportation between the quay and stacks.
Plans to expand the facility on reclaimed land in front of the quay will shorten this distance, enabling the introduction of shuttle carriers there as well.
Container throughput of Muuga CT will be some 125,000 TEU this year, with both the Estonian economy and transit cargo to and from Russia and Asia guaranteeing annual growth of about 10%.
