Skyjack Lowers the Boom for Maintenance

Contractors performing maintenance works on the slipped Wightlink passenger catamaran Our Lady Pamela used two knuckle boom cranes from the AFI Aerial Platforms rental fleet to ensure easy access to all parts of the vessel.

Muhlhan Surface Protection Ltd used Skyjack TK46 booms to apply special protective coatings to the vessel, which operates between Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight in the United Kingdom.

The knuckle booms enabled workers to gain easy outreach over the low flat deck. They have also proven effective at accessing vessels in dry dock.

The bend in the knuckle of the boom lets the operator work below ground level to reach the vessel.

AFI is one of a small number of powered access rental companies to have knuckle booms in its rental fleet. The company's Skyjack TK46 and TK66 booms can work at depths of 18 to 37ft.

AFI corporate development director Nick Selley said, 'We have a number of knuckle boom in our fleet and they are much in demand for specialist access requirements, particularly in reaching out and down from the side of a dock.'
