Diesel Power & Propulsion

Portuguese Propulsion Package

The Arsenal do Alfeite yard in Portugal has built two 16.1m aluminium patrol boats for that country's navy. Each boat is powered by twin Scania DI12M marine diesels rated 460kW at 2,200 rpm which are direct coupled to UltraJet 376 waterjets.

During recent sea trials in Sesimbra Bay the required contract speed of 23.5 knots with a displacement of 19 tons was comfortably exceeded, the boats reaching 27.5 knots at 2,000rpm with a displacement of just under 20 tons.

The vessel's deep 'V' hull worked well with the Scania/ UltraJet propulsion system, providing a comfortable ride in waves and positive steering response. Both boats will be in service with the Direccao Geral de Autoridade Maritima - Policia Maritima with primary duties of search and rescue, coastal and fishing surveillance. Each boat will have a crew of three and room to carry an additional nine passengers.

Crucial to successful patrol and intercept operations, the UltraJets provide the control and manoeuvrability required for low speed loitering or high speed pursuit. The boats are fitted with two independent electrohydraulic control systems, a conventional steering wheel and a twin lever reversing system for use in rough seas, which is backed up with an UltraJet joystick control system.

High resistance to cavitation is inherent in the UltraJet design, allowing full power to be safely applied from low speeds for good acceleration.
