Cardiff Education Seminar
01 Oct 2005
Reconciling academic and professional standards with the needs of the commercial hydrographic industry now facing a shortage of skilled personnel as a result of declining numbers of students and courses with hydrographic content is to be the subject of a one day seminar organised by the Hydrographic Society UK at Cardiff University 's Conference Centre on Friday 11 November.
Issues to be discussed include education and training versus experience, professional accreditation, competence, standards and codes of practice, and client confidence. A closing session will consider proposals for a holistic framework covering appraisal of hydrographic surveyors.
Dr Hance Smith of Cardiff University and Tim Hallpike of Southampton Solent University are among a wide cross section of speakers drawn from both academia and industry. The registration fee, covering also lunch and refreshments, is £100 for Society members and £125 for non-members. There are also a limited number of places for retired and student members (including 2005 graduates still seeking employment) for £75.
Details are available from Helen Atkinson, Hydrographic Society UK (Tel-Fax: 01752 223512 Email: info@ths. org. uk).
