Mock Maritime Mediation at Seatrade International
01 Oct 2005
The increasingly popular mediation services offered by maritime lawyers were showcased last month at the Seatrade International Maritime Convention , with the staging of a mock mediation by the Maritime Solicitors Mediation Service (MSMS).
According to Rhys Clift, a partner in international law firm Hill Taylor Dickinson and a co-founder of MSMS, over 75% of disputes submitted to mediation settle on the day or shortly afterwards.
He said, 'Mediation is quick, without prejudice, confidential and offers parties a chance to vent their views and emotions without the cost and risk of a trial. It's a service which is increasingly popular with shipowners, charterers and insurers. This session shows the inner workings of mediation and how even the most intractable problems can be settled.'
The MSMS was launched in 2003 and is made up of 19 maritime legal firms. Mediation is typically used as an adjunct to the established maritime court and arbitration systems in London. Mediation was introduced to the commercial world following the introduction of the Civil Procedure Rules in 1999.
