Multi-jurisdictional Law Lands Shortsea Shipping Deal

Law firm Eversheds hasadvised Icelandic shipping company Samskip on its acquisition of short sea shipping operator Seawheel.

Following Samskip's recent acquisition of Dutch shortsea intermodal operator Geest North Sea Line , this latest deal creates one of Europe's most comprehensive short sea container shipping networks.

The deal will provide Samskip customers with significant economies of scale, greater port coverage and increased sailing frequency. Eversheds was instructed by Samskip to provide advice across all aspects of the deal, from due diligence to HR to real estate.

The deal further strengthens Eversheds' credentials in the international shipping sector following its involvement in the 'Tasman Spirit' case. Knowledge of multi-jurisdictional law was required, with legal advice being coordinated from Holland, Ireland and Germany.

According to Samskip CEO Michael Hassing, the company will integrate Seawheel's activities with those of both Samskip and Geest.

Geest managing director Wout Pronk said, 'We are all confident that the SamskipGeest-Seawheel organisation will be a powerful force in the intra European shortsea shipping arena and that the best practices of the three companies will benefit customers, suppliers and personnel alike.'
