CCTV Boosts Aggregate Dredgers' Security
01 Oct 2005
Southampton UK based marine aggregates dredger operators CEMEX Marine have had CCTV security systems installed on their fleet of seven vessels in order to comply with the ISPS Code.
Although the vessels were due to have systems fitted by July 2004, the MCA accepted the difficulty of installing high level security equipment on board vessels and agreed a deadline extension that allowed installations to take place during scheduled dry dockings at a variety of European locations.
Teams from Cheshire UK based systems provider VUE Limited completed installations in ports from Hull to Amsterdam, enabling CEMEX Marine to not only meet ISPS requirements with regard to cameras at entry points but also installed extra cameras in the engine rooms and other locations where there could be potential hazards or safety issues. With nine video channels available per vessel, VUE installed between five and nine of its only specialised 'QuarryWatch' colour cameras per vessel. These were mounted on VUE brackets specially designed for marine use.
The CEMEX Marine fleet is clearly now more secure, with all points of entry and the main gangway covered. As further cameras are now situated at sites where accidents could happen or fires could break out, they are now parts of the ships' warning systems. Also, if an accident were to occur or in cases of unauthorised entry, all movements can be monitored and recorded.
