K Damen Complete the First of Three Bugsier Tugs
01 Oct 2005
Dutch builders Shipyard K Damen Europe BV has delivered the first of three virtually identical tractor tugs to Bugsier Reederei und Bergungs-Gesellschaft mbH & Co KG of Hamburg.
This first vessel, named Bugsier 1 , is designed and licensed for use as a shiphandling tug and is reported to have excellent and safe handling characteristics. Two further vessels, Bugsier 2 and Bugsier 3 , currently under construction and due for delivery in 2006, will be built to the same basic specification but modified to meet the requirements necessary for seagoing operation. All three vessels will meet the requirements of Germanischer Lloyd, (100A5 M E1, 'Tug', GL (MC E1 AUT.
Bugsier 1 is a traditional azimuthing tractor tug of 30.65m in length overall and 11.75m beam and very similar to previous vessels of the same type in the Bugsier fleet. Two Deutz main engines produce a total of 5,000 bhp (4,050kW) to power a pair of Rolls-Royce Aquamaster US 305 fully steerable propulsion units located forward of amidships.
The units incorporate fixed pitch propellers and the usual thrust augmenting nozzle. On trials the tug achieved a free running speed of 12.3 knots and bollard pull of 60 tons, thus failing to meet the required 65 tons predicted.
Although the vessel will enter service with the Bugsier fleet in the meantime a modification is to be prepared during the coming months and implemented to overcome this deficiency.
