Seawork Feedback Inspires Subsea Cleaner

Following a successful visit to Seawork 2005 , Surrey UK based Fraer Pump and Engineering have responded to customer requests and refined two existing products to develop a subsea cleaning system which can be deployed to remove harbour corrosion both above and below water. Many visitors to the stand at Seawork expressed a need for a smaller, more mobile machine that could tackle such tasks within a harbour environment.

International Cooperation Saves Trapped Submariners

James Fisher Rumic Ltd , which operates the British Royal Navy 's submarine rescue service, completed a successful four day operation to rescue the Russian Priz AS-28 submersible, saving the lives of seven Russian sailors trapped in the mini-submarine 625ft below the Pacific on the ocean floor off Russia's far eastern Kamchatka peninsula. The rescue was achieved with the trapped sailors having fewer than ten hours of air remaining for survival.

Van Oord Consortium Wins Extension Project

Netherlands based Van Oord has been awarded a contract for the extension of the coal terminal and port basin at the Port of Richards Bay , South Africa. The client is the National Ports Authority of South Africa . The project will be executed in cooperation with several local companies with Van Oord's share in the consortium set up to execute the work being 50%.

Flexcrete Completes High Profile Marine Project in Qatar

Flexcrete , the British company that specialises in repairing and protecting concrete structures, has completed an important project in Doha in the Middle East. The project saw the company coat a sea wall spanning 500m in Doha, the capital of Qatar on the east coast of the peninsula in the Arabian Gulf.

Data Buoys Debut

Surrey UK based Planet Ocean has announced a new 'off the shelf' range of data buoy platforms for environmental instrumentation in all operational conditions. Starting with the low cost 1.24m DB-124 inshore buoy and rising to the open ocean 3m DB-300 model, all in the range incorporate high specification radar reflectors, self contained solar powered navigational light, through hull deployment tubes, solar panels and integral equipment housings. The buoys are foam filled and unsinkable.

Salvors Warn on STS Restrictions

Salvage operations involving the ship-to-ship (STS) transfer of cargo and bunkers from tankers and other vessels should be exempt from new controls proposed by Spain and Mexico and now under consideration by the International Maritime Organization's Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC). The International Salvage Union (ISU) believes that the proposed new rules could hamper salvors' efforts to prevent a future Prestige type spill catastrophe.

Doubled Capacity at Russian Port

P&O Ports has reached agreement with joint venture partner Transportation Investment Holdings Limited (TIHL) to double the size of its port operations at Vostochny in Russia. Vostochny is located at the eastern end of the Trans Siberian Railway, which provides competitive transit times for cargo from Asia to Europe, the CIS countries and elsewhere in Russia.

The US Navy has unveiled plans for a major transformation in military marine navigation, with paper nautical charts to be replaced by advanced, interactive electronic navigation systems throughout the fleet. The ECDIS-N will be based on the Voyage Management System software developed by Sperry Marine operating with digital nautical charts produced by the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency.

Fairmount Heavy Transport Floats in Norway

Fairmount Heavy Transport NV has closed a $50m offering of new equity, the proceeds of which will be used to acquire the semi-submersible barges BOA 19 and BOA 20 from BOA Offshore AS of Norway as well as for general corporate purposes. The barges will be converted to self propelled transport vessels in works scheduled for completion in the second half of next year.

Offshore Upsurge at Lerwick

The offshore oil industry has contributed to a 5% increase in the volume of cargo handled at Lerwick Harbour in Shetland over the first half of 2005. The high level of industry activity saw 119 oil related vessels calling at Lerwick, up 30% on the same period in 2004, which had also seen an upturn in offshore traffic.

EC Shipbuilding Aid Approved

The European Commission has approved a 27m scheme in Germany to provide innovation aid to shipbuilding. The scheme is the first of its kind to be approved after the entry into force on 1 January 2004 of the Commission’s framework on state aid to shipbuilding, which introduced revised rules on aid in support of innovation in the shipbuilding sector.

The gift includes some 40 275 and 150 Newton Lifejackets , all with integral safety harnesses and embroidered with the OYT Scotland logo. Both organisations see this as the start of an ongoing relationship, with Crewsaver using the Fleet as an R&D test bed while also looking for other ways to encourage support for the charity.

Mudflats Investigation Brings Relief

Kent County Council in the UK are proposing to build a road bridge across the mudflats of Milton Creek, a tidal waterway to the north of Sittingbourne that connects the town to the Swale and Thames Estuary. The bridge will carry the Sittingbourne Northern Relief Road at a point where the creek is approximately 100m wide and has a tidal range of 0m to 4m.

Seawork regulars MarineCo Ltd had an unexpected but welcome experience at Seawork 2005. As the company’s Chris Dinham explained, ‘A group of fishermen came onto the stand and, after the usual negotiation, handed me £750 in cash for rope to be delivered the following week. It’s very unusual to be handed so much cash at an exhibition.’

Multraship Towage & Salvage ofTerneuzen has purchased the Bulgarian towage and salvage operator Bourgas Tug Services (BTS). BTS provides harbour towage, local salvage and line handling services in and around the Bulgarian port of Bourgas. It has a fleet of four tugboats ranging from 1,500 to 4,300bhp and 50 employees.

Fairplay Towage and URS Order Tugs from Spain

Hamburg based tug owner Fairplay Towage and their Belgian associate company URS have placed an order for four new tugs with Astilleros Armon in Spain. Two of the vessels, due for delivery in February and August 2007 will be used primarily in Hamburg and Rotterdam and two identical sisters will join the URS fleet in the port of Zeebrugge. Fairplay Towage has a 50 percent holding in URS.
