Dockstavarvet Celebrates a Successful Century of Boat Building

Sweden's Dockstavarvet is celebrating 100 years of operation this month with the east coast shipyard busily building another two pilot boats for the Danish Pilots . The sister craft will be the 22nd and 23rd pilot boats built by Dockstavarvet for the Danish Pilots and continue a lineage of pilot boats which dates back to 1906.

The company was founded in 1905 by Nils Sundin and built a variety of wooden boats for work and pleasure well into the 1950s with a workforce of only five employees. Karl Sundin took over in 1960, adding new workshops and a new slipway which enabled the work force to expand to 15. In 1975, management of Dockstavarvet passed to a third generation, with the brothers Karl-Anders, Torsten and Per Sundin taking over the operation.

The yard switched its focus to aluminium built workboats in the 1950s and now concentrates on producing a variety of models up to 30m in length. The workshops have been continuously extended and modernised and are now fully equipped with the most modern tools. The workforce now numbers around 40, assisted by a network of local contractors.

All newbuildings are completed indoors and ready for trials immediately after launch.

Dockstavarvet now has an in-house CAD office and works to the ISO 9001 Quality Assurance system.

The yard's portfolio of standard designs covers a range of passenger and patrol boats as well as pilot launches. Since 1974 Dockstavarvet has built more than 40 fast aluminium pilot launches for operators in Sweden, Turkey, Denmark and the UK. The type CB 90 H fast landing craft/patrol boat has been in serial production since 1990 and some 240 units are now in service with forces in Sweden, Norway, Greece, Estonia, Mexico and Malaysia.

The two boats currently under build are sister craft to two 14m pilot launches recently delivered to the Belt Pilot organisation in Denmark. They differ from the earlier two craft in having a split level wheelhouse which puts the helmsman in a raised position in relation to his passengers.
