Straddle Carrier Refurbishment at Tilbury

UK terminal operator Tilbury Container Services (TCS) has awarded Kalmar a major contract for the refurbishment of 13 straddle carriers. The project comes on top of an existing contract whereby Kalmar is carrying out routine servicing of the entire TCS straddle carrier fleet. TCS currently operates 39 straddles at its Tilbury terminal, a mix of Kalmar and other brands.

Dutch dredging giant Royal Boskalis Westminster says reports emanating from the Singapore and Malaysian press mention a breakthrough in discussions between the two countries which could result in the resumption of sand supply from Malaysian waters to Singapore land reclamation projects in the short term. Massive land reclamation works in Singapore, which were suspended in mid-2002 due to controversy over sand winning rights, represent a value of ?317m in the Boskalis order book.

Wartsila/BLRT Joint Venture

The Wartsila Corporation and the BLRT Group of Estonia are setting up a second joint venture to service ships in the Baltic area. To be owned 51% by Wartsila and 49% by BLRT, the new company will be called Wartsila BLRT Services Klaipeda UAB and will provide a single source of marine service covering all aspects of ship repair, including the servicing of engines, gearboxes, propellers and other ship equipment.

Container handling equipment provider Kalmar, whose machines handle every fourth container or trailer transfer at terminals around the world, has boosted its presence in the American market with the acquisition of East Coast Cranes and Electrical Contracting Incorporated (ECC). ECC has over 100 employees working in ports predominantly on the US East Coast and the Gulf of Mexico but is also carrying out projects on the West Coast, in the Caribbean and in Latin America.

Imtech Buys Radio Holland

Imtech NV is to acquire the Radio Holland Group BV in a move that will almost double the revenues of its maritime markets to some ?350m while increasing staff to 1,700 people. The acquisition will be formalised after the expected approval of Dutch and German regulatory authorities. Imtech technology is on board an ever growing number of ships but has not had a global service network, a shortcoming that Radio Holland Group's extensive network will remedy.

Rapid Rescue Rewarded

A SeaFrance Dover to Calais ferry crew was awarded their country's National Sea Rescue Society (SNSM) medal last month for the courageous rescue at sea of a passenger last November. The passenger fell overboard into very cold water from another company's ship. An alarm was raised and SeaFrance Rodin diverted its route, located the passenger, launched a high speed lifeboat and saved the person's life with a rapid response rescue.

Southampton UK based underwater engineering company UMC International has been purchased by marine services provider V.Ships. UMC has diving teams servicing both the commercial marine and military sectors out of bases in Plymouth, Rotterdam, Dubai and Fujairah. UMC will retain its name and existing management. The new owners expect their existing client base to fuel UMC's expansion as well as synergies with other units of V.Ships' marine services division.

British Government Cuts UK Light Dues

The British Government has reduced the light dues paid by merchant ships for aids to navigation in UK waters from 39 pence to 35 pence per ton in 2006/07. The tonnage cap will remain at the same 35,000 tons, making the maximum charge for light dues £12,250 per voyage.

Final Approval for Bathside Bay

The British Government has given final approval for Hutchison Port's proposal to build a new £300m container terminal on a greenfield site at Bathside Bay, Harwich. The development, which will be known as the Harwich International Container Port, will have a capacity of 1.7m TEU per annum, 1,400m of quayside, and will be capable of handling four large container ships.

'Razorbill' Flies After Repower

An 8.5m fibreglass fishing boat operated out of Ramsgate UK by full-time fisherman Trevor Lamb has been repowered with a Perkins Sabre M215C diesel engine coupled to a PRM 750 gearbox. The boat was getting too slow with its old engine but following the repower, Razorbill now has a top speed of 10 knots.

Worldwide Ecological Shipping & Transport (WEST) of Rome has developed a patented process whereby large container ships could be powered by Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF).

A Closer Look at 'Abeille Liberte'

The entry into service of two advanced Emergency Towing Vessels (ETVs), Abeille Bourbon and Abeille Liberte, designed to provide emergency response services along the French coastline and western approaches, was reported in these pages in May and October of last year. Since then both tugs have assisted a number of casualties and continue to settle down in the ETV role. As part of the familiarisation process Abeille Liberte visited Britain for a couple of days in March to participate in the MCA emergency response event Exercise Bluewater.

News of the recent arrival of the new Adsteam Harty and Adsteam Warden to the fleet of Adsteam Medway came with confirmation that Australian owned Adsteam Marine is to invest heavily in more tugs of the same type. The vessels are further examples of the Damen ASD Tug 2411 ordered from Damen Shipyards at Gorinchem and built in Damen facilities in the Far East.
