Rapid Replacement of Damaged Winches
01 Apr 2006
When the tanker Cape Bradley collided with a cargo vessel off the French coast recently, considerable damage was done to the entire foreship and to winch equipment in particular.
The damaged vessel docked at the Lloyd-Werft yard in Bremerhaven and winch fragments were forwarded to HATLAPA in Uetersen/Hamburg. Within two weeks HATLAPA had produced new starboard winches of their own design which were tested and approved on the HATLAPA test bench by the ship's management as well as a classification society.
Cape Bradley also received two new roller chain stoppers, a windlass part for 70mm stud link chain, a double drum mooring winch with a pull of 150kN and a winch gear with high pressure hydraulic drive.
HATLAPA teams in various departments worked 24/7 to deliver these components to the schedule required by the ship management and the shipyard.
HATLAPA also contributed recently when the CSO Deep Blue underwent a major drydocking at Fincantieri's Palermo shipyard for a class survey, overhaul, and an upgrade to the mooring system to allow spooling of pipe under extreme offshore conditions.
The modification work carried out by HATLAPA to a mooring system they had supplied originally included changing the rope drums from non-split type to split type, changing manually operated dog clutches to hydraulically controlled friction clutches, converted manually operated spindle band brakes to hydraulically actuated band brakes, and upgrading the hydraulic power packs to provide high redundancy, including providing each winch unit with its own power supply.
HATLAPA also installed a load control system incorporating full remote control to allow various mooring functions to be operated safely with joystick control and a touch screen on the bridge.
