Soundings of Silence on River Thames

Marine exhaust silencing solution provider Halyard Marine Ltd has helped achieve lower noise levels on the River Thames with a new exhaust system fitted to a Port of London Authority (PLA) survey vessel.
The PLA is responsible for surveying the river bed and shoreline for 90 miles of the tidal River Thames from Teddington in the west of London through central London and out to the Thames Estuary. At its most recent refit, the PLA's largest survey vessel Verifier was fitted with new Caterpillar C32 engines and a specially designed Halyard exhaust system which has made a substantial reduction in 'pass by' noise and internal reverberation.
Andy Nailor, the PLA's marine engineering superintendent said, 'We are really pleased with the new Halyard exhaust on Verifier .
Continuous monitoring of the river and estuary is essential to safe navigation. Noise and vibration must be minimised on Verifier to achieve the best results from the vessel's hydrographic equipment, as well as keeping external noise levels at a minimum. The improved Halyard system helps to ensure our surveys of the tidal Thames are completed effectively and with a greater degree of comfort for our crew.'
