High Fidelity from New Tug Simulator

The Pacific Maritime Institute (PMI) has chosen a Transas Full Mission Tug Simulator to install at their facility in the Port of Seattle USA.

The simulator is designed to meet the specific training requirements of the West Coast towing industry, with local operators such as Crowley, Foss and Sause Brothers providing important technical input to the project.

A unique and flexible bridge layout allows for the rapid reconfiguration of equipment to closely mimic the specialised ergonomics of conventional, Z-Drive and Voith Schneider propulsion tugs. Adding to the level of realism is the expanded view from the simulator bridge, offering near full coverage around the horizon and a large, vertical field of view typical of modern tugs.

The ability to operate the new tug simulator with existing PMI full mission ship simulator and secondary bridges will provide for interactive training exercises between multiple vessels.

The project is made possible following Transas' recent development of a number of advanced towing and tug/barge functional capabilities for the Navi-Trainer Professional product in response to demand from North American users.

The new features were developed with significant input from experts who specialise within this critical field of maritime training and include advanced hydrodynamic, winch, fender, line, bridle and three dimensional interaction modelling as well as many instructor features to enhance yet simplify usability.

The first of two new tug hydrodynamic models was recently tested and validated in Seattle and a further model will be added to the Transas library of tug models soon.

PMI director Gregg Trunnell said, 'Progressive tug boat operators recognise the advantages of simulation training. With Transas' new tug model and features, we've increased the scope and fidelity of the training so our current customers can improve and expand their simulation training experience and we can attract new business.'

The first classes on the new simulator are scheduled to begin this month.
