Docking Revolution set with Volvo Penta IPS Joystick

Fine control for one-handed manoeuvring in congested port and harbour areas will be available this year for boats equipped with Volvo Penta's IPS system. IPS was initially launched into the leisure market a year ago and became available for workboat applications at the Europort Rotterdam exhibition last November.

IPS is a totally integrated twin engine propulsion package with each 310hp IPS400 engine powering a steerable propulsion unit on the underside of the hull equipped with twin forward facing propellers. The system promises enhanced performance, comfort, manoeuvrability and fuel economy compared with traditional shaft installations.

From this month, operators of boats equipped with IPS will be able to specify Volvo Penta's new IPS Joystick with newbuilds or add to existing vessels as a retrofit. It utilises the system's diesel engines and drive units to provide exceptionally high power and manoeuvring performance, with significantly greater side thrust. The power is available for all types of low speed manoeuvres, even in difficult conditions with high winds and strong currents.

Engine speed is limited to 1,500rpm to control the power of the manoeuvres and ensure the boat does not start to plane when being manoeuvred forwards. In the event of additional power being required, there is a booster function to increase the engines' sideways thrust.

The operator needs only to push the joystick in the direction they wish the boat to go. The brain behind the manoeuvres is the EVC system, which transforms those inputs into specific throttle, gear and steering instructions. The joystick function can be quickly and easily be neutralised by pressing the connection button, turning the wheel or touching the throttle or gear levers.

The IPS Joystick is ergonomically designed, with recessed pushbuttons to prevent the system from being activated by mistake. The splash-proof unit can be permanently mounted externally. Up to four control stations can be furnished with joysticks. As no extra equipment needs to be installed, there are no additional service requirements.
