Seawork Review

Paints and Paintings for Seawork Star

One of the outstanding vessels on the floating pontoon at Seawork 2006 was Skomer, the new 19m pilot boat for Milford Haven Port Authority built by Mustang Marine (Wales) Ltd to a Camarc design. Noticeably larger than other pilot boats on the Seawork pontoon, Skomer will also serve as a patrol launch within the Haven and take visiting dignitaries on inspection tours.

Justifiably proud of their new flagship, Milford Haven Port Authority commissioned marine artist Robert G Lloyd to paint a portrait of the boat at work in Haven waters. This painting was reproduced on the front cover of MJ's Seawork exhibition issue and also as a large canvas which was displayed on MJ's stand within the show. As Seawork 2006 drew to a conclusion, the canvas was presented to John Littleton and Skomer's crew as representatives of Milford Haven Port Authority.

Finished to a high standard by Mustang Marine, Skomer's appearance is further enhanced with a striking paint job applied using products supplied by another Seawork exhibitor, Jotun Paints.

Skomer is completely protected from the notoriously harsh marine environment in which it will work and the anticipated 1,000 vessel impacts per year it will absorb by Jotun products.

Antifouling SeaForce 90 covers the underwater areas whilst topsides and superstructure received Jotamastic 87 and Hardtop AS, and JotaArmour AS was applied to the decks.

SeaForce antifoulings complement Jotun's SeaQuantum range and benefit from a new patent pending ingredient, Polymer Plasticiser Technology (PPT), a film modifier which remains fixed and stable for maximum strength throughout the lifetime of the coating without threatening the marine environment.

The Jotamstic 87 two pack epoxy primer over coated with Hardtop AS polyurethane delivers a hard wearing anti-corrosion system. Hardtop AS can be tinted to most BS or RAL shades and was used to give Skomer its distinctive orange and green livery in a topcoat that will retain its appearance.

Health and safety issues are critical on a boat where pilot transfer is the primary activity, which is why Skomer's decks were coated with JotaArmour AS. The non-slip coating was first developed for the UK Ministry of Defence for use on the decks of aircraft carriers and provides an excellent surface on which personnel can move safely.
