Unusual Newbuildings from Fassmer
01 Aug 2006
Small boat builder Fassmer has completed the unusual sounding and hydrographic measurement catamaran Orka for German authorities and also booked the first of a new type of ferry for Senegal.
The 18.5m long and 8.4m wide catamaran Orka will see service on the Kiel Canal and Elbe River for the Wasser und Schiffahrtsdirektion Nord (WSD), which is responsible for the Canal and adjacent waterways. The reason for the catamaran design this time, Fassmer reported, was to optimise stability and measurement work.
The twin hulls are shaped to provide a required 15kms/hour with little wave swell.
A multi-channel echo sounding system from Simrad, Type EA MCU 24, allows precise measurements. Two hydraulically operated sounding arms provide a 15m sounding width and a free working deck together with an hydraulic crane allow the operation of other hydrographic gear.
Both the hulls and the main deck are of steel, with the superstructures of aluminium.
Orka is equipped with two Volvo engines, Type D7A TA, each of 153kW and operating with ZF Type 301C gearing and driving two five-blade Schottel rudder Tel: 01268 684422 . Fax: 01268 511164 www. blythworkcats. co. uk propellers of Type SRP 110 EST.
Booked for delivery next year, meanwhile, is a very different kind of vessel from Fassmer, a 75m ferry for Senegal which is the first of her kind from the yard. Fully compliant with SOLAS/IMO regulations, the 1,950 ton displacement Ro-Pax vessel has been specially developed for the African market. It will carry 678 passengers as well as 18 'transport units', and 12 trucks. The ferry will also boast a cargo space of more than 600m 2, with a stern ramp.
The ferry is designed for short international voyages and is powered by two 1,800kW Wartsila 9L 20 engines providing 14.5 knots. Fassmer said special care had been taken with stability, seaworthiness and manoeuverability to guarantee safe operation.
