Marine Study Begins for Oman's 'Blue City' New Development

The Sultanate of Oman will be the location for the latest self-contained residential and tourist complex in the Middle East when the US$15bn Blue City project gets under way.

Located in the coastal region of Al Sawaidi, the Blue City project will be 30 minutes drive from Oman International Airport and 80km north of Muscat. Royal Haskoning with assistance from Posford Haskoning Environment Gulf has been appointed to undertake a marine study and the preliminary design of all marine and waterway structures.

Blue City is a 35km 2new city development with a coastal frontage of 16km.

The development comprises a city centre, residential areas, health and education facilities, parkland, golf courses, harbour, marinas and an extensive network of canals and waterways.

On completion the development is expected to support a population of over 200,000 residents and visitors.

The marine environment will act as a key feature of the proposed Blue City development so the completion of a marine study is important to ensure the development's compatibility with the marine and coastal environment. The study, which has been commissioned by Bahrain based Ahmed Janahi Architects, will consider a number of issues including water quality, water circulation, sediment transport and wave action.

Royal Haskoning's team working on the project includes staff from the Peterborough office and from the Posford Haskoning Environment Gulf office in Bahrain.
