Hydrographic Survey by David Goodfellow

Survey Ships Head for OI 06

At least six state of the art survey vessels from France, Sweden, Holland and the UK are scheduled to berth at the Royal Victoria Dock alongside the London ExCel Centre at next month's biennial Oceanology International exhibition and conference from 21 to 23 March. Among them will be RV Triton, the world's largest motor powered trimaran, originally built by Vosper Thornycroft on behalf of QinetiQ for research into development of the Royal Navy's new Type 45 frigates and other technologies (including some for the US Department of Defense).

RV Triton, now owned by Gardline Marine Sciences, will be on the quayside at OI 06.

Now owned by Gardline Marine Sciences of Great Yarmouth and equipped with the latest multibeam and other sensors, the 90m ship has lately been carrying out hydrographic operations in the North Sea for the Maritime & Coastguard Agency as well as geophysical work for the oil and gas industry.

Other vessels due to demonstrate their wares and capability include Ixsurvey, a French Type B survey craft for offshore use, and Franklin, a Swedish oceanographic and hydrographic ship whose survey launch will conduct live surveys while streaming data to Marin Matteknik's stand in the main exhibition hall. Meanwhile, Aquatech will officially unveil its new Aquadynamic 12m launch which has already been surveying the Bristol Channel as well as working around UK coastlines in support of offshore wind farm environmental assessments.

With 600 exhibitors from 15 countries in addition to main conference proceedings and fringe events concerned with oceanographic technologies and related issues, OI 06 is expected to attract over 8,000 visitors.
