Approval for Renewables Test Facility

The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney has achieved a world first by gaining United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) accreditation for its unique testing facilities. These provide detailed and highly accurate data on the performance of devices developed to harness wave energy.

EMEC's role is to show how much power the machines produce in a variety of sea and weather conditions. The information is vitally important for developers, giving EMEC a global role in the development of a new marine renewables industry with huge potential for Scotland and the UK.

Reliable, independent testing of these new technologies is essential if decisions about their support and development are to have a sound basis. UKAS has a vital role to play in this regard since it assures that testing facilities operate to the international standard ISO/IEC 17025:2005.

Hence, EMEC's accreditation is also significant for UKAS, which is used to meeting challenges posed by the need to accredit bodies which are developing evaluation techniques for new and emerging technologies.

Jane Beaumont, accreditation director of UKAS said, 'UKAS is also delighted that accreditation is again assisting the Government, this time in relation to its obligations to reduce the production of greenhouse gases.'
