Small Isles, Big Resource as Alderney Explores Tidal Power

The States of Alderney, located eight miles from France, is not part of the UK or EU and has its own elected government which passes its own laws.

Alderney has one of the best and most accessible tidal power resources in Europe.

Unlike the other Channel Islands, it owns three miles of the seabed around its islands and happily possesses one of the best and most accessible tidal power resources in Europe.

With tidal stream technology making rapid progress towards economic viability, Alderney is looking to develop this potential and be in a position to export large quantities of electricity via submarine cable to the European grid.

With this aim in mind, the States of Alderney and Alderney Renewable Energy Ltd (ARE) have signed a five year contract which gives ARE exclusive license to research and test tidal and wave power devices. If successful in meeting certain targets, ARE will then have the right to choose 50% of designated Alderney waters to utilise for the purpose of producing tidal energy.

The contract provides a staged approach to tidal stream power in Alderney, with the initial five year testing and development period being undertaken before any commitment to developing large commercial tidal farms.

The States of Alderney have also committed to formalising the Alderney Commission for Renewable Energy (ARCE) which has been operating as a shadow commission.

Representatives from both ARE and ARCE attended a Franco-British Marine Energies Seminar in Le Havre last month which brought European experts from various fields within the renewable energy sector together for a workshop.

ARE made a presentation to the conference on Alderney's resource and its tidal stream power project.

Brian Goddard of ARCE commented afterwards, 'This was an extremely valuable opportunity to advance discussions with relevant governmental and commercial organisations. We were encouraged by the response of most parties who recognise the potential of Alderney's resource and are keen to discuss aspects of cooperation.'
