Diedrich re-engines 'Spiekeroog11'

The small Schiffswerft Diedrich yard in Oldersum, Germany was expecting to complete one of its most complex re-engining projects ever late this month. Owners Nordseebad Spiekeroog on the East Frisian island of the same name off the German North Sea coast paid a reported ?650,000 for the extensive work on the 670 passenger, 495 grt ferry Spiekeroog 11.

An access hole was cut in the port side hull for the removal of the ship's old British Dorman diesel engines and the installation of two new Mitsubishi S6R2 MPTA main engines, each of 445kW and 1,350revs/min, along with new Reintjes gearing and a new 460kW auxiliary engine, also from Mitsubishi. Local German engine specialist Petzelberger in Aurich supplied, installed and put the new engine plant into operation.

The project also covered installation of the new engines' supply and exhaust connections and of a new Veth-Jet bow thruster, Type 2-K-1200 with a 360kW electric motor of 1,800revs/min.

The yard said that new unit was tough enough to cope with Force 9-10 winds.

A spokesperson for Diedrich told MJ the installation of the new bow thruster, engines and gearing, along with some regular maintenance and overhaul, had been completed before year's end.

The yard was also overhauling the crankshaft and adapting it to the new engines. Water, waste and fuel connections were being added this month with completion tentatively expected for the end of January after final maintenance and overhaul work, the spokesperson said.

The engine upgrade on Spiekeroog 11 is designed to better equip the vessel for the five or six trips to Heligoland planned in the 2006 excursion season. Without it, the owners felt the trips could only be made in fine weather and then, only with a reduced 400 passenger total.
