Mustang Building Repair Reputation
01 Jan 2006
One of the UK's leading workboat builders has made great strides into the vessel repair, maintenance and conversion sector since acquiring new and larger premises in 2004. With 80 and 750 ton slipways, Mustang Marine of Pembroke Dock in South Wales now lays claim to the largest such facility on the UK's west coast and is able slip vessels of up to approximately 700 tons and 50m in length.
The slips were in use almost continuously throughout 2005. One of the many projects taken on was the repair and partial conversion of MFV Cranogwen, a vessel belonging to the South Wales Sea Fisheries Joint Committee, which wanted the aging vessel modernised. Mustang removed the old steel wheelhouse and replaced it with a new one fabricated in-house of aluminium. The aft deck was completely revamped with bulwarks swept away, most of the decking replaced and provision made for landing and securing a daughter craft.
Mustang also undertook a major new electrical installation which included a Simrad navcomms package with Transas ECDIS. MFV Cranogwen's hull was blasted back to bare metal, repairs were made to steelwork as required and the £350,000 works completed with a respray.
With Williams Marine and Port Services Ltd, the recently established joint venture between Williams Shipping Marine and The Milford Docks Company, now established in the Port of Pembroke, its substantial fleet of workboats and barges are regular visitors to the Mustang slips. Another Mustang project in 2005 saw a complete refit of the 18.7m pontoon workboat WMPS Seahorse which included the installation of two new Daewoo diesels for enhanced speed and bollard pull. Currently undergoing refit is the barge WMPS Wilcat, to be followed shortly by the installation of winches and a four point mooring system on another WMPS barge plus repairs and a paint job for the 18m twin screw tug WMPS Wilfreedom.
Also scheduled into Mustang's busy repair and maintenance schedule is an annual refit for the range support vessel Smit Towy and repairs along with an MCA survey for Coastal Launch Services' Jessica S.
