Marine Claims Agents Simulate Life at Sea
01 Jul 2006
London based P&I insurance clubs have broadened their knowledge of claims after attending a five day course in simulation at South Tyneside College. On the course were two representatives from the Britannia Steamship Insurance Association and two members of Thomas Miller & Co's London branch.
The course, which was created especially for P&I by the College, was designed to equip members of the claims team with the knowledge needed to assess a claim made on accidents that have occurred at sea and to minimise the loss of money to companies affected by these claims.
The course covered topics such as radar, electronic chart systems, bridge procedures, teamwork, and ship monitoring.
Captain Chris Thompson, Head of Marine Simulation, Ports and Harbours at South Tyneside College said, 'The College often creates courses for companies from a range of marine areas, and these training programmes prove to be ideal for equipping people with the skills necessary to carry out their jobs more effectively.
'P&I commented on how delighted they were with the quality of the course. Some of the students on the course had no experience of being at sea although they were aware of the legal aspects of claims, so this training programme made them more knowledgeable with regards to sea procedures.'
