New Quay Completed at Rye

Construction of the Rye Fish Market Quay, situated on the western bank of the tidal River Rother near Rye, is now complete. Commissioned by the Environment Agency, designed by Atkins and constructed by Jackson Civil Engineering, the £4.7m project is one of only 11 registered fish landing sites in England and Wales.

Atkins began the work at Rye with a detailed appraisal of Fish Market Quay in 2003 and decided that the existing timber jetties had come to the end of their design life and recommended the construction of a new sheet pile wall. The project followed these recommendations, replacing a number of old jetties along the fish quay and installing a 200m long sheet pile wall with a reinforced concrete capping beam.

This solution has a number of benefits. It provides new mooring facilities for the Rye fishing fleet and improves the working conditions of the fishermen in accordance with current safety and fish landing standards. An innovative mooring system allows vessels to safely moor alongside the sheet pile wall under all tidal conditions.

The sheet pile wall and beam provide a new flood defence for the quay and surrounding areas of Rye town. This protective structure is designed to work in conjunction with the neighbouring River Rother Tidal Walls project (designed by Halcrow) and delivers protection against a one in 200 annual flood risk. The project team faced many challenges at Fish Market Quay, not least the need to maintain an operational fish landing site throughout the construction process.

Following the successful completion of both the quay and the River Rother Tidal Walls project, Jackson Civil Engineering won a contract for the second phase of the work. Scheduled to finish by the end of last month, this was to see completion of the tidal defences on the west side of the River Rother.
