The new vessel, a Damen Stan Tug 1906, entered service in June and is already busy carrying out towage work around the UK and short sea operations from its home port. Valiant B replaces the 'improved Girl class' vessel Christine and offers considerably more power and greater versatility.

The tug will also be used to assist with dry dockings and general towage in the Falmouth area.

In most respects the vessel is typical of the host of Damen Stan Tug 1906 tugs produced by Damen's shipyard at Gorinchem and elsewhere around the world.

The hull is in all respects a 'standard', well established product and the vessel is fitted out to comply with the requirements of Bureau Veritas + Hull, MACH Coastal Area and the MCA Workboat Code Category 2, 60 miles from a safe haven.

Valiant B is 19.70m in length overall with a maximum beam of 6.38m, a draft aft of 2.59m, and displacement of 133 tons.

Integral tanks accommodate 24.3m 3of fuel, 2.3m 3of fresh water and 1.7m 3of water ballast.

Two Caterpillar 3412C TA/B diesel main engines produce a total of 1,440bhp at a maximum continuous rating of 1,800rpm.

Power is transmitted to a pair of bronze, fixed pitch Promarin propellers via Reintjes WAF 364L gearboxes with a reduction ratio of 1:4.48. The propellers rotate within two 1,500mm diameter Van der Giessen Optima fixed nozzles of the latest type, working in conjunction with matching high lift rudders. This highly successful combination gave the tug a bollard pull on trials of 22.4 tons and a maximum free running speed of 11.7 knots.

Electrical power is supplied by a single Lister DWS 4 generator set with a rating of 27.5kVA at 50Hz, 230-240v, 3 phase and a Lister LPW 4 14kVA harbour set. Two 24v, 200 amp/hour battery packs are installed for engine starting and domestic use. Both main engines and the auxiliaries are keel cooled.

The working deck aft has been kept as free from obstruction as possible. A stern roller is fitted on the centreline aft and the bulwarks are cut away in two locations (port & starboard) to enable pipelines and other equipment to be brought across the deck for assembly or repair.

A Heila HLM 13-3S knuckle boom crane is installed adjacent to the towing winch to give complete coverage of the after deck. The crane has a capacity of 1 ton at its maximum reach of 10.97m and a 1.6 ton winch and wire hoist equipment is also provided.

A single drum Kraayveld winch, with a maximum brake holding load of 45 tons is fitted for towing and anchor handling.

In addition, a Mampaey quick release tow hook with a safe working load of 250 kN is provided and mounted on the usual 'Dutch style' bitts. Two 105kg 'Pool' high holding power anchors are handled by a small hydraulically powered windlass on the foredeck.

The large well glazed wheelhouse, with the latest window configuration, has seating and messing facilities and can be used to transport up to 12 seated passengers if required.

A full width forward console houses controls and instrumentation for the engines, propulsion, steering and auxiliary functions. Navigational equipment includes a Furuno FR-7062 radar, a Cassens and Plath - Kotter type magnetic compass, a Simrad AP-50, a Furuno FCV600L echosounder, a Furuno GP-90 GPS and PC based plotter.

For communications the tug is equipped with one Sailor RT5022 and one Sailor RT2048 VHF radios and a Furuno NX-700 Navtex.

Accommodation is provided during normal use for up to four persons in one cabin below decks with the usual adjacent galley and sanitary facilities.
