Baltic Container Terminal Prepares Its Own Gantries and Cranes
01 Jun 2006
Baltic Container Terminal (BCT) in Gdynia, Poland, is preparing to add four new rubber tyred gantries (RTGs) and two new quay cranes to its cargo handling equipment fleet. The project includes the in-house erection and installation works of the four RTGs.
The new RTGs are capable of stacking containers one over five high and are equipped with the latest in handling and safety technology. The cranes are based on an all-electric concept without the need for hydraulics and are equipped with a low emission diesel engine. Trolley, spreader and wheel movements are all electric powered.
The RTGs will be delivered in knockdown mode and will be assembled by BCT technical staff, fitted with all the components, and tested under the supervision of supplier engineers. Such a solution is a 'win/win' for both buyer and supplier, facilitating economies and efficiencies on both sides.
The first two cranes were due to become operational last month and the remaining two units are scheduled to come into service this month. This will play a part in raising the capacity of the terminal to 750,000 TEU per year.
BCT's innovative policy of undertaking its own crane assembly is possible as, for many years, its workforce undertook this activity on a contract basis, gaining all the required qualifications and expert know how. The terminal has extensive experience of this activity, both in terms of meeting its own requirements and orders for third parties.
Altogether BCT has erected more than 40 cranes for external contractors and recently, BCT technical staff raised eight of their own existing RTGs from one over three to one over five stacking capacity.
