Wartsila Seal of Success at Seawork

Finland based Wartsila Corporation is the world's leading supplier of marine engineered sealing systems, offering a full range of both radial and axial seal types which are commonly known as face seals and lip seals.

Wartsila will be showing seals, which they can provide for any type of commercial ship, at Seawork 2006, including face seals specifically designed for the workboat and leisure craft market.

Wartsila's ManeGuard seal, in either fully split or partially split configuration, has been designed exclusively for water lubricated stern tubes as 'fit and forget' seals with high reliability and long service intervals.

Of course Wartsila is also well known for its marine engines and the company has recently won a contract to deliver the power plant for a new RoPax being built for Finnish shipping company Viking Line at Aker Yards in Helsinki.

The 2,500 passenger ferry will operate between Helsinki and Tallinn in Estonia.

Wartsila will deliver four 8 cylinder 46F main engines, each producing 10,000kW at 600rpm, and three 8 cylinder Wartsila Auxpac 20 gensets, each of 1,350kWe output. The low weight of these engines will enable the ferries to have an increased payload capacity compared with alternative engines. Catalysts will minimise NOx emissions in the exhaust gases.

The main criteria for selection of the Wartsila 46F was that fuel consumption can be optimised for the complex operating profile with frequent variations in engine power during the crossings between Helsinki and Tallinn. The fuel consumption can be optimised for both constant speed operation when entering and leaving ports and variable speed operation during passages across the Gulf of Finland.

Built for year round navigation of the Baltic at a service speed of 25 knots, the Ice Class 1A Super ferry promises comfortable travel with modern dining and shopping facilities for passengers and their vehicles.
