Wind Farm Sector Guidance on Underwater Cabling

One of the issues raised by the growing UK investment in offshore wind farms is that of the cabling that connects turbines to the mainland.

In particular, there is concern that the cabling should have a minimal impact on the marine environment.

With this in mind, Royal Haskoning has been asked to produce technical and guidance documents on the subject for the wind farm industry.

The effects of cabling on the environment have been looked at in environmental impact assessments during planning consent processes for every wind farm.

The new project, commissioned by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), will also gather a wide range of information and recommend mitigation measures for reducing the scale of effects.

The research has included investigations into the long term monitoring of installed cabling for Danish wind farms and lessons learned from cabling in the telecommunications industry.

In the latest step in a consultation process, drafts of the documents will be sent to regulators in order to gather their feedback. The drafts will then be developed further and presented to the DTI. Once complete, the documents will be made available to wind farm developers to create a useful authoritative source of information.
