Alnmaritec Landing Craft Delivers the Goods for Greenland

Seawork exhibitor Alnmaritec has recently launched a 12m landing craft for German shipping company Reederei Erwin Strahlmann. T/T Turpena is the first of a pair of vessels to be used for supplying small towns on the southwest coast of Greenland. Working with a mother ship, it will be lifted by ship's crane into the water laden with stores for short runs shore.
The wide variety of landing grounds to be encountered drove the owner and designer towards a waterjet installation for enhanced manoeuvrability and safety in shallow water conditions. Twin Cummins 4BTA marine diesels drive Hamilton 274 waterjets. The engines are keel cooled with dry exhausts due to the very cold conditions encountered in Greenland.
A small cabin with seating for the crew and helmsman is situated at the aft end of a large open deck. A diesel heating system warms both this space and the engine room.
Once alongside in a harbour, the vessel can be unloaded using its own Palfinger PK6500 marine crane or by a forklift accessing palletised cargo via the forward ramp.
The vessel is based on an earlier Alnmaritec design built for similar service, with alterations made to increase cargo capacity and stability when deploying the crane. Many smaller design details have also been refined.
