Corrosion Resistant Bearings Make Seawork Debut

The Seaeye Falcon, built by Fareham UK based Seaeye Marine Ltd, is among the first portable ROVs designed to meet the operational requirements of inshore and coastal operations. To work in water depths to 300m, the Falcon's chassis components must have high strength, low part mass and corrosion resistance.
Seaeye Marine thus chose to use clevis joints with igubal bearings from first time Seawork exhibitor igus UK. Made of high performance polymers, the igubal bearings eliminate the problems of maintaining stainless steel clevis joints in underwater applications.
They are ideal for corrosion exposed applications as they are light weight, self-lubricating, maintenance free, have high levels of wear, temperature, chemical and shock resistance and are non-conductive. They also offer a long service life and claim substantial cost savings over stainless steel products.
igus engineers develop more than 100 new plastic compounds and test the resultant maintenancefree plain bearings in more than 2,500 experiments per year. As a result, they have been able to build an extensive database of the tribological properties of their polymers, which they will share with visitors to stand S20-S21 at Seawork 2006.
