Merwede Shipyard Booked Into 2008

IHC Holland Merwede's Merwede Shipyard at Hardinxveld-Giessendam has followed up an earlier letter of intent with a contract to design and build a new pipe laying/offshore construction vessel for global marine engineering contractors Subsea 7.

The order, valued at up to $200m depending on fitment options, consolidates the cooperation and goodwill built during a successful collaboration last year for a rigid reeled pipe layer, which proved the builder's ability to design and deliver a vessel at a fixed price within a short delivery time. The newbuild will be delivered in the second quarter of 2008, complete with integration of pipe laying spread and cranes. Huisman Itrec will design and build the pipe laying equipment.

The 151m LOA vessel dynamically positioned vessel will be equipped with a vertical pipe lay system with top tension capability in excess of 400 tons combined with a storage capacity for flexible pipe based on two 1,250 ton carousels below deck and a 3,000 ton carousel or multiple reels on deck. The vessel will have a 400 ton deepwater crane, a built in deepwater ROV spread and a comprehensive survey system.

The ship will have a 6.6kV integrated electric power generation system and propulsion by three electro-motor driven fixed pitch propellers in azimuthing nozzles aft. Two retracting azimuth thrusters will be fitted forward and one transverse thruster will be arranged in a tunnel forward.

This contract stretches the Merwede Shipyard order book well into 2008, with full occupation throughout 2007. The design and build of this one vessel will require over 500,000 man hours at the yard and approximately double this number of hours at suppliers and subcontractors.
